It’s amazing how time flies! Just had Convocation and Homecoming, and Halloween is almost here!
Last week, the Optometric Private Practice Club hosted Dr. Chris Lievens, OD, and he gave us some great advice on resumes/CVs. I had no idea how much strategy was involved in creating a resume. I thought that as long as the resume looked good and had great content I would be good to go. Nope. I’m so glad I find out now! A big thank you to Dr. Lievens for a great night.
I got to attend the Vision Care Institute sponsored by Johnson and Johnson and it was amazing! It’s an opportunity for Third and Fourth Years to get extra hands-on training with specialty contact lenses like toric and multifocal contact lenses for people with astigmatism and how would otherwise need bifocals. On top of the hands on training, I got to tour the manufacturing facility for all their Acuvue products and got to hear lectures from some great speakers. One of the speakers introduced me to the idea of catering to your patient’s personality. He even did a personality analysis with each of us and the results were stunning….maybe even a little spooky! I’m going to be able to recognize and meet my patients that much better because of my experience. I would highly recommend the seminar to every optometry student.
As far as clinic goes, it’s great and nearly always a challenge. I had two first-time experiences on Friday which was exciting. I saw my first patient in a wheelchair in the clinic and saw my first patient that had diabetic eye problems. Doing an exam on a patient in a wheelchair made for a slower exam and I was frustrated with how long it took me to finish. However, I was able to finish with my last patient of the day in about an hour with a full dilated exam. Both received the care they needed, but I wish I could’ve helped the first one a bit quicker. I’ll just have to keep working on it.
Lastly, I got my KMK study materials this last week. I take National Boards Part I in March so it’s time to get studying!
TTFN,
Devin
