Southern College of Optometry's Student Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity (SVOSH) chapter was recently recognized with the 2013 Spirit of Giving Award from the Volunteer Mid-South Hands On Network. Recognizing volunteer spirit, SVOSH received the Large Group of the Year Award in recognition of its work with providing vision care and eyeglasses to impoverished countries around the world.
Founded at SCO in 1975, SVOSH was the first chapter at an optometry college. Over those 38 years, the group has worked with Lions Clubs and other community partners to collect several hundred thousand pairs of eyeglasses valued at more than $1 million. This year's group of volunteers will travel to Belarus, Belize, Mexico, Jamaica, Colombia and Honduras.
Accepting the award was Tina Grosshans, '14, SVOSH President. She's pictured at center with (L-R) fellow SVOSH officers Laura Verwilst, Blake Jarrard, SVOSH adviser Dr. Beth Sparrow and Anna Lammers. Congratulations to these students for representing SCO so positively in our community.
