For the first time since 2019, SCO hosted an all-campus, in-person Convocation ceremony honoring the achievements of faculty, staff, and outstanding alumni. The SCO community gathered the morning of September 14 at the Renasant Convention Center for the ceremony as first-year students sat together in their new white coats.
With student awards scheduled to be presented later in the year, SCO President Lewis Reich, OD, PhD, delivered remarks about the state of the college in which he commended the SCO community for working through the challenges posed by the pandemic over the previous years. He saluted SCO’s 90th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of The Eye Center, both of which will be officially celebrated during Fall Homecoming and CE Weekend.
Sharon Berger Moscow, OD ’80, received SCO’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest award bestowed by the college. In her remarks, she reminded students to never forget the opportunities in which optometrists can make a difference, even if it’s just in the life of one patient. She also recounted the advances made by the profession during her career and encouraged students to keep moving the profession forward legislatively.
Dr. Moscow has been in private practice since 1980 in Georgia, where she also practices with her husband, Billy Moscow, OD ’78, son, Scott Moscow, OD ’13, and Michelle Moscow, OD ’17. She’s been active in various leadership positions involving vision therapy and served on SCO’s Board of Trustees from 2008-2017.
Receiving SCO’s Young Alumni Award was Erick Henderson, OD ’17. Dr. Henderson was an active student leader and continues to serve in leadership roles within the AOA and in Pennsylvania optometry. In 2021, he was honored as the AOA’s Young OD of the Year.
In his remarks, Dr. Henderson also encouraged students to give back to patients in need and thanked his wife, Erin Keim, OD ’17, for her support during their time in optometry school. They’re the parent of a daughter, Maeve Marie Henderson, born October 26, 2021.
