Southern College of Optometry and The Eye Center at SCO were pleased to partner recently with the newly dedicated South Memphis Alliance Laundromat and Resource Center. Located in South Memphis, the facility was a popular location for area residents, so a decision was made to add on-site resources and health information to the benefit of the thousands of patrons who visit each week.
SCO provided a kiosk that provides information risk factors for eye health and vision conditions. A self-guided vision screening allows users to determine how well they see, but it does not provide a prescription or diagnostic information, nor is it a substitute for an eye examination.
By allowing patrons in this neighborhood to identify the need for an examination, the kiosk permits users to request an appointment with The Eye Center. Dr. Aaron Kerr, Chief of The Eye Center's Community Vision Health Services is seen assisting a first-time user of the kiosk.
"We're pleased to be one of the many community resources available to patrons in this neighborhood," said Dr. Kristin K. Anderson, SCO's Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was officiated by Memphis Mayor and former SCO Board of Trustees member AC Wharton. Visit the South Memphis Alliance's website to learn more details and see additional photos from the dedication ceremony.
