Dr. Wil McGriff has recently been named the 2018 TAOP Educator of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians. This is award is awarded to optometric educators who exhibit both excellence and service.
Besides being a member of the faculty at SCO, Dr. McGriff serves as chair of the SCO faculty and he interacts with professionals inside and outside of optometry at the local, state and now national communities. He also manages the “Saturday Service Experience” where he coordinates volunteer student interns to provide comprehensive eye care to residents of Synergy – a one-year substance abuse rehabilitation program that helps individuals remain sober and find employment.
Dr. McGriff is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Optometry, first with a master’s degree in public health in 2000 and then his OD degree in 2010. Following that, he completed a Family Practice Residency at the University of Alabama.
He is highly involved and co-ordinates the Mid-South Rotary Club on the SCO campus to allow colleagues and students to become involved in community activities. He is director of the community service educational curriculum which has grown significantly since inception. Dr. McGriff has been chosen as a recipient of the Drs. Fred and Charlene Burnett Outstanding Faculty Award. Externally, he has been elected to serve as one of the Section Councilors of the Vision Care Section of the American Public Health Association.
