Sparks, III, practiced privately for seven years with his father (Bernard I. Sparks, Jr. - SCO Class of 1947) before joining the faculty of the Southern College of Optometry in 1984. He has served the College in clinical, didactic, and administrative capacities including Director of Externships (1985-1993) and Chair of the Optometry Department (1993-1997). He has also served as instructor-of-record for the Advanced Optometry course sequence. He also sees patients part-time in a Memphis ophthalmology practice.Dr. Sparks became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 1994 and a professor at the Southern College of Optometry in 1999. He has published numerous journal articles and scientific posters. Dr. Sparks was awarded Teacher of the Year six times and he received the Beta Sigma Kappa Clinical Educator of the Year award in 1993. His other professional affiliations include the American Optometric Association, the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians, and the West Tennessee Optometric Physicians Society.
