Dr. Heard was an assistant professor of Clinical Optometry at The Ohio State University College of Optometry (TOSUCO) until 2007 when she joined the faculty at the Southern College of Optometry. Now a professor, Dr. Heard’s areas of interest include diabetes patient education, nutrition and eye health, ocular disease management, and vision care for individuals with behavioral conditions.
In 2005, she authored The Optometry Drug Guide: Informed Decision-Making at the Point of Care, which is updated annually.
Dr. Heard is a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), National Optometric Association (NOA), Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians (TAOP), West Tennessee Optometric Physicians Society (WTOPS), Optometric Retina Society, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. She is currently a Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE) Reviewer, SCO Vision Therapy & Rehabilitation Residency co-supervisor, and Chair of the ASCO Optometry Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee.
Dr. Heard received the Epsilon Psi Epsilon Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award in 1997 and the NOA Optometrist of the Year in 1998. She is a volunteer for AOA Vision USA. Since 2001, Dr. Heard has served as a clinical and senior examiner for the National Board of Examination in Optometry Clinical Skills Examination. Dr. Heard served as Central Ohio Optometric Association Zone Governor in 2002. She was the 19th NOA President from 2003-05.
