In 2008, 25 SCO student interns from SVOSH (Student Volunteers in Optometric Service to Humanity) traveled with six faculty memberse to East Tennessee to participate in their first Rural Area Medical (RAM) clinic. This past summer, SVOSH participated in its second regional mission in Wise, Virginia. Four students worked with others, including nursing and medical students, to see more than 1,225 patients.
This fall, SVOSH has participated in its third regional mission, the latest in Jenkins, Kentucky. Accompanied by Dr. Beth Sparrow from the faculty, the group worked with optometrists from the Kentucky Optometric Association to provide care for several hundred patients.
Jared Quesenberry, '12, Regional Missions Coordinator for SVOSH, reports that this latest trip was a great success. SCO's mission calls for fostering a personal commitment to service in our graduates. This recent trip report demonstrates that today's generation of optometry students are already heeding this call to service through their work.
