More than 550 men, women and children (and a few dogs!) attended the 3rd annual Memphis VisionWalk held at Overton Park on Saturday, October 23rd.
The family-friendly walk is a national event created to raise awareness and to fundraise for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The foundation is a non-profit organization which drives research to prevent blindness, and provides treatments for people affected by Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Macular Degeneration, Usher syndrome, and to find cures for the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases. Since its inception in 2006, the walk has raised more than $23 million dollars to fund sight-saving research.
Locally, the Memphis VisionWalk raised approximately $55,000 through corporate sponsorships, individual donors and team participation. In attendance were Congressman Steve Cohen, honorary chair, Rocky the Redbird, and Mississippi Riverkings Mascot – Sheldon the turtle.
SCO has been a proud sponsor of the VisionWalk since 2008. More than 300 faculty, staff, students, and friends of the college participated in the VisionWalk this year. Dr. Lebowitz, SCO faculty member and Foundation Fighting blindness board member said, “We could not be more pleased with the turnout this year! What a joy to be able to show our support for the people in our community affected by sight-threatening diseases and our dedication to the efforts to find cures. We are already looking forward to next year’s walk and expect it to be even bigger!”
