Alicea Smith, '13, recently was honored at the 43rd conference of the National Optometric Association (NOA) in San Diego.
Smith, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, and a 2008 graduate of Tougaloo College in Jackson, received two awards. She earned the Cave Memorial Award, a scholarship sponsored by the NOA to recognize a student who has made a positive impact in the minority community.
She also received the Dr. David W. White, Jr., Memorial Scholarship. Sponsored by the Mississippi Chapter of the NOA, the award recognizes an outstanding optometry student planning to practice in Mississippi.
Smith serves as SCO's NOSA President. Also attending the NOA meeting was Marion Harris, '13, SCO's NOSA Treasurer.
The faculty was additionally well represented at the NOA meeting. Dr. Janette Dumas, Assistant Professor, presented a lecture about the national board exams to NOSA students from across the country. She familiarized students with the format for each part of the boards and offered helpful study tips and ways to prepare.
