After a nice long weekend, I had optical Monday. Normally there are eight student interns and on average we all see anywhere from 30-40 patients. However, yesterday my group had 3 people out sick, so we were incredibly busy! I don't think I sat down once, but I didn't care because it gave me more patient encounters and more exposure to the different types of lenses, frame selection and importantly how the different types of vision insurances work. Also, there is this new optical incentive "game" that started this semester. Throughout the day each intern keeps track of the total amount of money that he/she generates and at the end of the day records it on a piece of paper. Prizes such as gift cards to coffee shops, movies, etc. are awarded to the intern with the highest amount per day and at the end of the semester a bigger prize is given to the intern with the highest amount of the entire semester. I thought I had it in the bag last night when I left (especially since we had 3 interns out), but this morning one of my classmates informed me that she had beaten me by $700! I guess I have to work much harder to win next time!
