This past weekend I was a student monitor at the Heart of America Conference in Kansas City. It was great to meet optometry students from other schools, as well as many ODs from across the Midwest. There were 1800 people in attendance at the meeting. The exhibit hall had over a hundred vendors from all different aspects of the optometric industry. I learned about cutting edge lens materials, contact lenses, and ophthalmic equipment.
All the doctors had bar codes on their name tags and the monitors would scan them as they came in and out of a courses. This is how continuing education credits are tracked. I went to courses on optic nerve diseases and pharmacology. Both were excellent reviews for the boards. The monitors were given stipend for room and board so it made the trip very affordable.
Kansas City is such a vibrant city. I was amazed at how well the Power and Light district refurbished older brick buildings. We had dinner at the Gordon Biersch Brewery, then watched Irish dancers and listened to a local band at an Irish pub near by. All in all it was a great weekend, but now I must get back to studying because boards are only a month away.
