Greetings to ALL…
Let me start off with saying “Wow!” With two weeks of optometry school under my belt, there seems like there is so much to say. I’ll just take it bit by bit for you without trying to ramble too much.
We are already one week away from examinations. After the first exam, they ALL start to roll our way. Not to mention we have a lab practical using our retinoscopes to neutralize lenses with the phoropter. Yes, TWO weeks in, and I’m already using a phoropter. I have friends who attend other optometry schools, and they envy me! On a serious note, as an optometric student, you certainly have to be well organized and efficient with your time because there is so much material being thrown at you. Balance is key, and even with that you still have your days where you are “tiurrdd” (tired) as Dr. Newman would say. One thing I must say is you have to stay positive. I knew this would not be easy. I knew this would be a challenge. And for those reasons every time I leave campus, I feel even more confident that I can handle anything that comes my way.
I can officially say that SCO was the RIGHT choice for me. As far as faculty, the Doctors are here for one reason, and that is to MAKE the students here the best doctors they can possibly want to be. The school’s mission statement is not taken lightly by any means. The professors here take it very seriously, as they should. It’s so refreshing to hear from our professors that they see us as future colleagues, and that they want to ensure that we are well equipped as students and well prepared as future optometrists. Before I was accepted here, I would read about all the remarkable things SCO has to offer. Now as an actual student, I am a witness to it.
I have a lot more to say, but I have to attend to the family. That’s part of MY balance. Actually, before I go, I do have one more story on why SCO is absolutely the BEST. Here it is Labor Day weekend, and on Sunday morning my 2 year old son wakes up with his eyes sealed shut with a yellowish discharge. I call the Eye Center to get the office hours, preparing to have to take my son to the emergency room and spend lots of time and money, and excitingly find out that the Eye Center has doctors on call. I left a message letting them know I was a student, and within 5 minutes a resident doctor called me back willing to meet me at the school to see my son. So my family and I are at the Eye Clinic, and not only is there one doctor there, but THREE (the on-call resident doctor, her husband who is an optometrist, and also a staff doctor). They were all so friendly, even with it being a Sunday morning. They examined my son’s eyes, and diagnosed everything that was going on. Unbelievable! We truly appreciate everything they did.
Until next time…. Later~
