My name is Feyi and I am so happy to be writing to you as a member of Southern College of Optometry's class of 2016. To share a little bit about myself, I will be making my way to Memphis from Nashville, TN. I'm a 2010 graduate of Tulane University (Roll Wave!) in New Orleans, LA. Since graduation, I've been working in psychology/neuroscience research at Vanderbilt University here in Nashville. I'm very excited to be starting a new chapter of my academic and professional life at SCO this fall.
Optometry is a field that I first became familiar with as a patient (I got my first pair of glasses in the 4th grade and my optometrist has been helping me see clearly ever since). I've also seen disease such as glaucoma and cataracts affect a few people who are close to me. I knew I wanted a career in which I could directly impact the lives of others and healthcare is something I have been interested in for as long as I can remember. After shadowing many healthcare professionals and exploring different fields, optometry has continually stood out as the best match for me and the vision I have for my future.
After being on campus for my interview, I knew right then that SCO was where I was meant to be. SCO has built and maintained a reputation of excellence within the optometric community. I have no doubt that SCO will prepare and equip me with the knowledge and experience I need to become an excellent optometrist. Above all, I truly admire SCO's commitment to their students and the community. Community involvement and service is a big part of my life and it will be great to be a part of an institution that takes pride in that as well. A perfect match I must say! :-)
This Friday, my parents and I will be heading to Memphis for SCO's Housing Fair, an event hosted for all incoming students. It's definitely set to be an exciting time as we have the opportunity to attend a class with 1st years, meet with financial aid counselors, tour the campus and local apartment complexes, hear from current students, enjoy some Memphis BBQ (yum!) and finally meet some of our future classmates. I'll definitely write about all the housing fair happenings in my next blog post.
P.S. - for those who were wondering, there are about 170 days until orientation!
Thanks for reading and I look forward to sharing my journey with you!
