I can't believe it has almost been two months since I last wrote, sorry about not updating sooner, but I've been very busy! I've had my pre-clinic checkout, finals, a trip to Mexico and my first patient encounter in The Eye Center since my last update. I'm officially a third year student now, so I have started seeing patients in The Eye Center . Yes, my exam takes way too long, but I don't panic too much. I'm looking forward to seeing a wide variety of patients and learning a lot more clinic based information from my staff doctors.
The SVOSH trip was a great success! I had the pleasure of going to Mérida, Mexico in the Yucatán peninsula with 24 other students and 3 staff doctors. We had quite a big group and were able to see over 1,400 patients, giving out lots of glasses/sunglasses and really helping the people in the area. The first day we only had a handful of patients waiting when we arrived, but by the third and fourth day patients were lined up outside the door. We had such a long line that we ran until 6pm and needed to bring in extra chairs for all the waiting patients. It was a great learning experience, and it was clear that the patients were pleased with their exams as well. We were fortunate to have great hosts in Mérida with the local Lions Club. They welcomed us at the airport, funded our hotel, and fed us lots of delicious meals. Before leaving Mérida we celebrated with the Lions Club with cake, drinks, dancing, gifts and karaoke.
After 4 days in clinic we needed a break before starting school again, so we spent two days relaxing on the beach in Cancun. It was about a 4 hour drive from Mérida, so we broke up the trip by stopping at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. It was an exhausting trip, but so fun and so rewarding.
