One of SCO's most faithful and significant supporters, Charles Smart, OD '61, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2009. Visitation for Dr. Smart will be held at Taylor Funeral Home, 214 N. Main Street, in Dickson, Tennessee from 2-4 pm and from 6-8 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, November 21-22. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 am at St. Christopher Catholic Church, located at 713 W. College Street in Dickson.
Dr. Smart began his practice of Optometry in Dickson in 1964. He attended Father Ryan High School and George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville before being accepted to attend SCO. He graduated with Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees in 1961. He served as an officer in the United States Army Medical Service Corps until 1964 when he moved to Dickson.
Dr. Smart was a member of the Middle Tennessee Optometric Society, Tennessee Optometric Association, American Optometric Association and the Tennessee Academy of Optometry. He was a past president of the Tennessee Optometric Association and the Tennessee State Board of Examiners in Optometry. Dr. Smart served on the Dickson County Election Commission and was the chairman of the City of Dickson Health and Facilities Board.
Dr. Smart was married to the former Mary K. Dempsey of Seattle, Washington. They have five children, Bill, Paul, Jean Marie, Daniel and John. The SCO community extends its condolences to Dr. Smart's family and friends.
