Emmett G. Parham, OD '40, died Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, Mississippi. He was 91. A 1940 SCO graduate, Dr. Parham practiced 50 years .
Dr. Parham served on SCO's faculty from 1971 through 1990. SCO Professor Jim Newman, OD '73, spent several years in private practice with Dr. Parham.
"Practicing with Dr. Parham was like having a residency," Dr. Newman remembered. "He was always willing to show me interesting patients and keep me on my toes clinically."
Dr. Parham also served as President of Tennessee Optometric Association in 1972-1973. A private pilot and avid golfer, he served in the Navy in World War II and was stationed at the Navy Hospital on Guam at the end of the war.
He leaves his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley McCrary Parham, a daughter, Vicki Parham Watson of Olive Branch, Mississippi; and his son, Graham Parham and wife, Jami Parham, of Dallas, Texas; his grandson, Brian Watson and his wife, Kira Watson, and great-grandson, Callen Anthony Watson, of Smyrna, Tennessee.
The family received friends on Tuesday, June 7, with a memorial service following. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials be sent to Colonial Park or a charity of donor's choice. www.familyfuneralmemphis.com
