SCO is a proud part of Memphis, serving well over 50,000 patients and providing over $1.4 million dollars of charitable care to the community each year. We are rooted in Memphis and we care for Memphis. As an institution, we use our purchasing power to buy local, and we are determined to make this city a better place. Here are some of the ways we care:
- SCO continued its partnerships with the Achievement School District schools, in the economically disadvantaged Frayser neighborhood of Memphis, and Seeding Success, providing glasses when appropriate to over 800 elementary school students.
- In 2015, SCO’s School Screening Program provided care to 10,094 students at 69 locations across the city. A total of 2,412 students, or 23.9%, failed their screenings compared to 21.4% the previous year. The increase in the failure rate underscores the drive behind SCO’s effort to improve access to care for our youngest patients.
- Over 300 children attended SCO’s 2015 “Eye Spy: A Day at the Zoo” event, which educates children and parents about the importance of eye health. Children play, create, and learn at this popular yearly event, sponsored by Luxottica.
