Facility Description
The Salem
VA Medical Center is a 282-bed, tertiary referral center and teaching hospital,
providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art
technology. Salem serves veterans throughout the State of Virginia for
psychiatric, medical, and surgical care, and the medical center serves as a
tertiary referral center for acute and long-term psychiatric care. Salem has
community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Danville and Tazewell, Virginia.
Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and
long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine
and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended
care. Salem has an active affiliation with the University Of Virginia School Of
Medicine for the training of residents, medical students, and fellows in seven
specialties. A new affiliation with the Edward Via Virginia College of
Osteopathic Medicine is being developed. In addition, 39 associated
health-training programs are offered in affiliation with 26 colleges and
universities. An active research program includes 16 investigators working on 45
approved projects.
