The WJB Dorn VA Medical Center is a 244-bed facility, encompassing acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and long-term care. The hospital provides primary, secondary, and some tertiary care. The hospital operates a 112-bed Nursing Home Care Unit adjacent to the hospital. Satellite outpatient clinics are located in Anderson, Greenville, Florence, Orangeburg, Sumter and Rock Hill, SC. Dorn VAMC and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine share the same campus.

The Eye Clinic is situated in a beautiful, new two story building adjacent to the main part of the hospital. Dorn VAMC eye services include both ophthalmology and optometry providing veteran patients full service eye care. Specialties include cornea, retina, neurophthalmology, glaucoma, oculoplastics, retina, low vision, and specialty contact lenses.

The Eye Clinic houses an optical department staffed with a contract optician. Optometry is staffed by an experienced technician and both ophthalmology and optometry make use of an in-house contract technician who performs visual fields on a full time basis. Additional state-of-the-art equipment, such as a digital camera and ultrasonography further enhances our ability to provide full scope primary, secondary and tertiary eye care.

The DORN VAMC residency is fully accredited by the Council on Optometric Optometric Education. Optometric externs and University of South Carolina medical students rotate through the Dorn Eye Clinic. Since 1994, many optometric students from PCO and SCO have chosen Dorn as their primary care/ocular disease site.

Many educational opportunities exist to enhance one’s residency education. Among them are ophthalmology and optometry grand rounds conferences and internal medicine lunch conferences, all of which are held weekly. Internet access is readily available for each provider, including residents. Dorn VAMC houses a library; the USC School of Medicine offers a newly-renovated medical library as well. Both are nearby for easy access.
