The
WJB Dorn VA Medical Center is a
244-bed facility, encompassing acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and
long-term care. The hospital provides primary, secondary, and some tertiary
care. The hospital operates a 112-bed Nursing Home Care Unit adjacent to the
hospital. Satellite outpatient clinics are located in Anderson, Greenville,
Florence, Orangeburg, Sumter and Rock Hill, SC. Dorn VAMC and the University of
South Carolina School of Medicine share the same campus.
The Eye
Clinic is situated in a beautiful two story building adjacent to the main
part of the hospital that was built in 2001. Dorn VAMC eye services include both ophthalmology and
optometry providing veteran patients full service eye care. Specialties include
cornea, retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, retina, low vision,
and specialty contact lenses.
The Eye
Clinic houses an optical department staffed by contract opticians. Optometry
is staffed by experienced technicians. Additional state-of-the-art equipment, such as a digital camera, OCT, FDT visual field, and ultrasonography further enhances our ability to provide full scope primary,
secondary and tertiary eye care.

The Dorn
VAMC residency is fully accredited by the Council on Optometric Education. Optometric externs from five optometry schools and University of South Carolina medical students
rotate through the Dorn Eye Clinic. Since 1994, many optometric students from
Salus University and Southern College of Optometry have chosen Dorn as their primary care/ocular disease site. Additionally, optometric students from NOVA South Eastern, Michigan College of Optometry, and Indiana University have also joined us in the last few years.
Many
educational opportunities exist to enhance one's residency education. Among them
are grand rounds conferences and residency conferences. Internet access is readily
available for each provider, including residents for online library access. Other libraries on the campus include the Dorn VAMC library, and the USC School of Medicine library.
